One Fabulous Evening Supporting the Fine Arts in McKinney!

The Arts and Music Guild is a community of artists, musicians, poets and writers who exhibit, perform, mentor, and serve. We collaborate in order to bring the creative process before the public in meaningful ways.  The Guild is a 501c-3 non-profit incorporated in 2010.  With no paid staff, and no overhead, funds raised through donations and grants directly serve creatives and arts lovers in McKinney and neighboring North Texas communities.

Arts and Music Guild sponsored events such as the McKinney Art Studio Tour (MAST), the Summer Music Intensives and Passionate Hearts for McKinney Arts support the creative community and draw audiences to McKinney from across North Texas, making McKinney a significant arts destination.

The Passionate Hearts for McKinney Arts Gala is a fundraising opportunity for the Guild and participating arts organizations.  In 2016, the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts benefited from Gala revenues. In 2017 the Odysseus North Texas Chamber Orchestra (see below) will receive support from the Gala.  Proceeds from the Gala are seeded into the next generation of creatives through the development of scholarship funds.  Throughout the evening of the Gala, fine art by local artists is sold, and the artists receive 90% of the sale. The Gala facilitates a dialogue between area artists and art patrons.

Other Arts and Music Guild programs include community outreach through the 1-2-1 Program, which crosses generational boundaries and takes art to the least reached. Guild artists and apprentices (under 18) work with individual residents in skilled nursing centers.  The goal is to foster one-on-one relationships around the creative process.

The Cove is a cooperative venue in downtown McKinney that provides much needed exhibition space for its 42 members. A new and innovative art show opens every weekend, and artists receive 100% of any sales. The Cove also provides members space for their special art events and workshops, photography sessions, musical ensemble rehearsals and performances, and meetings.

Every spring the Arts and Music Guild provides volunteer support for the Unique by Nature Juried Art Competition and Exhibition, hosted by the McKinney Performing Arts Center. The Purchase Prize category serves to build the public art collection of MPAC. Art work submitted for the non-purchase prize category is juried and hung in a beautiful public exhibition during April. Generous cash prizes total over $10,000 in 2017.

Through events, community outreach, The Cove and arts scholarships, the Arts and Music Guild nurtures and supports artists and musicians, encourages mentoring of youth and emerging artists, and recognizes excellence among our arts professionals. All of these facets of the Guild benefit from funds raised through the Passionate Hearts for McKinney Arts Gala.

The Odysseus North Texas Chamber Orchestra is dedicated to deepening, strengthening and broadening its relationship with the communities it serves through music.  Founded in Denton in 2012, Odysseus North Texas Chamber Orchestra consists of nationally award-winning conductor and young professional musicians from the greater DFW area. In May 2012, Odysseus launched a successful inaugural performance featuring local soloists, performed with Christopher Deane, Professor of Percussion at the University of North Texas and gave the world premiere of Breathe by Brad Robin, a work commissioned by Artistic Director, Jason Lim. Innovative in its programs under the direction of Jason Lim, Odysseus collaborated with the Denton City Contemporary Ballet staging a full ballet performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, and in 2014 staged the premiere performance of the full production of Igor Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale.

In 2014, Odysseus Chamber Orchestra relocated from Denton and began planting new roots to become the resident professional orchestra of McKinney.  Since that time the orchestra has developed several innovative concert series ranging from classical to pops and family-friendly music.  Odysseus concerts are affordable, and every year a free chamber concert is offered in downtown McKinney.

Odysseus also is launching two exciting new programs for young musicians in the area: the Greater North Texas Youth Orchestra and a Young Artist Viola Competition.  Odysseus pioneered the Mentorship Program designed by Artistic Director Jason Lim. This program provides high school orchestra students the opportunity to rehearse and perform side-by-side with members of Odysseus.
In its short history, the Odysseus Chamber Orchestra has gained a growing national reputation as an emerging ensemble, winning third prize in the 2015 American Prize Competition for professional orchestras, 2nd prize in 2014, and in 2017 the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for Excellence in American Music.
Odysseus Chamber Orchestra has supported local service clubs like the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, the Robson Ranch Kiwanis Club, sponsoring events such as the Eliminate Project Cruise and the Passing of the Banner Dinner. The outreach programs of Odysseus have expanded in the last two years to include free amenity concerts in neighborhoods, educational school performances and collaboration with the Arts and Music Guild to organize the Summer Music Intensives.
